Adfam Forum: Research and Evidence on Parental Substance Use

Adfam forum events are open to anyone with an interest in supporting families affected by substance use, and seek to shine a light on a range of key topics relating to families and substance use.

Join us at our latest event where we will be focusing on parental substance use and the impact on children

Research by Nacoa estimates that 3 million children in the UK are living with parental alcohol problems, and according to the Children’s Commissioner for England’s data on childhood vulnerability, there were 478,000 children living with a parent with problem alcohol or drug use in 2019 to 2020.

Many of these children suffer from a range of challenges including neglect, trauma and abuse while being increasingly likely to present issues of their own in later life.

To explore this topic in more detail we are delighted to welcome guest speaker Professor Ruth McGovern. Ruth is a Professor of Public Health and Social Care at the Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University and a NIHR Population Health Career Science Fellow. Much of her research has focused upon developing and evaluating interventions for children and families living in poverty and/or affected by substance use, mental health and domestic violence. Ruth will be presenting insights from the range of existing research that has been conducted on the effects of parental substance use on children.
