Contingency Management and Drug Disorders

The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) defines contingency management as “a general behavioural intervention technique used in the treatment of drug dependence … designed to weaken drug use and strengthen abstinence.” A systematic review recently published by the organisation assesses the effectiveness of such methods when used in conjunction with pharmacological based treatments for dependence. It concludes that contingency management is a feasible and potentially useful technique for the treatment of drug use.
