On the 15th February 2018 Botswana held a graduation ceremony for the first cohort of locally trained Internationally Certified Addiction Professionals (ICAP) in the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC). The event was officiated by the then Minister of Health and Wellness Honourable Dorcas Makgatho, and graced by the United States of America Ambassador to Botswana, His Excellency Earl Miller as well as other delegates from both the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and the United States Embassy.
For his part the Ambassador, His .Excellency Earl Miller said that the graduates will add to Botswana capacity to treat substance use disorders. He said armed with the skills they have learnt in the UTC they can now share their expertise with colleagues in the entire health care system. Miller said the United States of America appreciates the beneficial and productive cooperation it has with Botswana and looks forward to continuing and building upon already close relationship.
Mr Alpheus Lemme one of the graduates said that he is very pleased to have completed the program “We all recognize the problem of drugs and as graduates we are going to work very hard to reduce the problems”, he noted.
The graduates include health personnel from Ministry of Health and Wellness, Ministry of Basic Education, Botswana Police Services and Botswana Substance Abuse Support Network (BOSASNet) an NGO. They are expected to help with treating people with Substance Use Disorders in various areas in Botswana.
