The 1st Sub-Regional Meeting for Mexico and Central America took place in San Salvador, El Salvador, from September 4 to 6, 2024. The event included several important components, such as two training sessions and a conference on substance use disorders. The first training was delivered by OEA/CICAD, focusing on trauma-informed care for women with Substance Use Disorders (SUD). The second course, led by CIJ, ISSUP Mexico’s host organization, covered "Selected Topics on Substance Use," addressing issues such as dual pathology, opioid use treatment, and new psychoactive substances. Additionally, a conference was held on the SUDS prevention model implemented by CIJ in Mexico.
The opening ceremony took place at the auditorium of the Salvadoran University Alberto Masferrer, ISSUP El Salvador’s host organization, and was attended by national and international authorities. Opening remarks were given by the University's Rector- Daysi de Gómez, Elizabeth Hoffman - Director of INL El Salvador, Ángela Crowdy - Deputy Executive Secretary of the OAS/CICAD, Eduardo Loyola - Executive Director of CNA, Carlos Núñez - Executive Director of FOSALUD, and Bárbara Correa - Regional Coordinator of ISSUP National Chapters.
During this event, a sub-regional gathering was held with the participation of representatives from ISSUP National Chapters in Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, and the Bahamas. They discussed the coordination of a sub-regional agenda for Central America aimed at uniting efforts and collaborating on issues related to youth, training, professional development, and access to evidence-based information.
