The ISSUP Uganda National Chapter was formally launched on 6th October 2022 at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Uganda. This in-person event was held with the support of the National Drug Authority and served as an opportunity to map out the stakeholders in substance abuse prevention and treatment.
In attendance were professionals from substance use prevention, treatment, and policy areas of practice. Dr Brian Mutamba, Deputy Director Butabika National Mental Referral Hospital and Dr. Hafsa Lukwata, Commissioner for Mental Health- Uganda Ministry of Health delivered solidarity remarks in support of ISSUP Uganda. They reiterated the critical need for multi-stakeholder collaboration in addressing substance use and substance use disorders. Dr Mutamba made special mention of the increasing occurrence of co-morbid addictive behaviour and the need for comprehensive treatment approaches.
Dr Rogers Kasirye, the ISSUP Uganda President and Executive Director of UYDEL in his introductory remarks emphasized the global call for evidence-based practice in the prevention, treatment and management of substance use disorders. Presenting the ISSUP Uganda Sustainability plan 2022 -2024, Dr Kasirye highlighted key strategic areas such as professional development, local partnerships, and knowledge sharing.
Various congratulatory messages were delivered to commemorate the official launch of ISSUP Uganda. Jeff Lee, Senior Consultant with ISSUP described the event as an important occasion which sets the stage for further collaboration between ISSUP and Uganda in the years ahead.
William McGlynn from INL, in a recorded video commended the efforts of the National Chapter in mobilizing the drug demand reduction workforce in Uganda. Most especially, in addressing youth prevention.
The landmark event ended successfully with an official signing of the sign in board by attendees.
