International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The 26th of June marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. First observed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, the day is "an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse."

The theme for the day is "Listen First - Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe." There is a call for improved  evidence and science based resources or initiatives to prevent drug use. 

An outcome document was produced in 2016 outlining the commitment of the United Nations against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. 

There is a strong focus in the outcome document on drug demand reduction and action that can be taken globally to meaningfully engage with human rights, issues affecting youth, children, women and communities. The document highlights emerging challenges, including new psychoactive substances, the need for strengthening international cooperation and alternative development.
