Don’t tell me what to do! Highlight from Effectiveness Bank Alcohol Treatment Matrix cell B2

DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

Focus is on the section of last week’s matrix cell release headed, “Don’t tell me what to do!” It explored probably the most well-evidenced way clinicians and counsellors can obstruct the progress of substance use patients: directing through advice and warnings, especially when the client is likely to react against being ‘told what to do’. We explain that even that ‘rule’ is sometimes best broken, one reason why treatment manuals are no substitute for socially skilled clinicians. A prime source is our own review, My way or yours?

“Makes skills development very accessible - love the fact that they [Drug and Alcohol Treatment Matrices] are truly bite-sized when compared to most other information circulated elsewhere.”
