Day 1, 14:00 - 15:30, ICUDDR, University ICUDDR Needs Assessment Survey for University Professionals

Presented at Thessaloniki 2024, on the 26th of June, 2024.

Description:

The First Milestone In Developing an Addiction Curriculum for Universities in Africa Needs Assessment Survey: A Three Country Comparison. The gap between scientific knowledge and daily addiction treatment partly results from the lack of adequate training in addiction medicine for health care professionals in many countries. So, availability of multidisciplinary specific curricula in treatment of substance use disorder based on and designed upon the demand of the university’s professionals will be the most efficient process to minimize the gap.

Over the last decade, increased attention has been placed on competence-based education as a means for optimizing the initial and postgraduate education of health professionals. As a result, in some countries, like Canada, the US, UK, and The Netherlands, competence based postgraduate addiction medicine education is well established; however, this is not the case at a global scale. ICUDDR Needs Assessment and Preparatory Work for Universities Questionnaire has been implemented in multiple Universities cooperating with ICUDDR. South Africa was the first African country to use the tool in the Continent, followed by Egypt, Nigeria and Morocco.
