On October 25, 2024, the official launch ceremony of the ISSUP Guatemala took place at the School of Psychology, University of San Carlos of Guatemala. This event marked a crucial step in the country's efforts to prevent and address substance use, bringing together experts and representatives from various national and international organizations.
The day commenced with the registration of guests, followed by a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by the Children's Orchestra of the National Conservatory of Guatemala. Mynor Lemus Urbina, the director of the School of Psychological Sciences, delivered a warm welcome.
Distinguished speakers such as Oscar Lujan from the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala and Andrea Escobar from OAS/CICAD shared insights and welcome remarks. Barbara Correa, ISSUP Regional Coordinator of ISSUP National Chapters, introduced ISSUP International and the new Guatemala Chapter.
A highlight of the event was the panel discussion on "Synthetic Substance Use in Guatemala and Its Impact on Migration, Security, and Economy." Esteemed panelists, including Rolando Lemus, Gerson Alegría, José Luis Benítez, Juan Carlos Araneda and Gonzalo Cadima presented their expert analyses on this critical issue.
As part of the event, the 1st Youth Forum in Guatemala was held, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in substance use demand reduction. The young leader Mónica Luna delivered an inspiring youth declaration, highlighting the crucial role of young people in creating comprehensive solutions for the nation.
The ceremony concluded with the swearing-in of new chapter members, led by Barbara Correa, and a heartfelt speech by Mónica Luna, representing Guatemala's youth. The Children's Orchestra gave a final performance.
