Day 1, 14:00 - 15:30, ICUDDR, Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice (KAP Study) of The Egyptian Diploma Students: “Recovery and Addiction Counseling” (Pre- Post evaluation)

Abstract

Credentialing and licensing the practice of substance use nonmedical professionals became crucial to ensure the treatment professionals meet specific eligibility requirements, and pass appropriate exams.

Since 2020, Egypt GSMHAT and Cairo University school of Medicine, Psychiatry department, started the first Addiction counselling Diploma for nonmedical disciplines professionals. 7 modules discussing theoretically and practically the addiction counseling and treatment sciences are designed, refined on yearly basis, and provided to the students in 100 hours of lectures and 450 hours of practical supervised exercises. Peer supervision and ethical issues were frequently and seriously discussed in the practical training. 8 University trainers professionals provides the modules now for 3 years and 3 successive genrations of professionals.

This study aimed to explore knowledge, attitude, and practice of students before and after the 1year Addiction and Recovery Counselling diploma education in Cairo, Egypt.

    Methods

    1. The authors and diploma trainers team designed the KAP questionnaire from the topics of the 7 modules of the diploma curriculum. Putting into considerations to balance between the statements denoting the attitudes and practice components and not only the knowledge component.
    2. 49 students received the KAP questionnaire early in the beginning of the studying year before the first lecture.
    3. The same 49 students answered the same KAP questionnaire at the end of the exam day.

    Comparative quantitative and qualitative analysis is done and will be presented.
