Gender is a system of social organization that differentiates men and women and by which situations of social advantage are produced compared to others of subordination and undervaluation. In addition, in the field of substances and addictions, problematic consumption in women, men and people with non-binary gender identities is linked to differentiated social variables and, therefore, any strategy or intervention should contemplate and study separately the aspects and factors that condition them, and therefore avoid barriers to access and the specific associated problems with respect to consumption.

The vision that the Ibero-American Network of NGOs working on Drug Addiction (RIOD) has generated from the study and analysis of the confluence between gender and substances will be provided.

Target audience:

  • The webinar is aimed at health and psychosocial professionals, such as doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers, who have contact with people who use substances or work directly with them.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Conceptualize the basic aspects to understand the gender perspective.

  2. Identify the basic aspects to incorporate the gender perspective in the field of substances, addressing issues such as data disaggregation, the necessary involvement of the public administration, the need for the accompaniment of experts in the field, among other issues.

  3. Self-Diagnosis Matrix, a tool to identify how to apply indicators to incorporate the gender perspective in substance interventions.
